Chocolate + Dogs = A Bad Holiday Combo

With the holidays around the corner, please keep in mind the need for protection of our beloved pets from chocolate. Our dogs are very curious and love to investigate. Chocolate goodies and candy are easy to secure so prevent a travesty of heartache from poisoning by making sure any chocolate is properly secured.

Exhaust due diligence w/ visitors, especially small children, who may not be aware of the fatal consequences. Losing your dog to toxic poisoning is terrible enough, but the costs of treating such an emergency at a veterinarian are very costly as well. Your bill may easily consume your entire Christmas gift budget!

An interesting note to make is that Baking Chocolate has the highest content of theobromine, the culprit in chocolate poisoning. It simply only takes two ounce squares to poison a 20 lb dog. The toxin affects the heart, kidneys, and the nervous system. Signs or symptoms of chocolate poisoning can include vomiting, diarrhea, hypertension, or even seizures.

Prompt medical attention is highly recommended because there is no antidote. Expect the vet to induce vomiting and to possibly pump their stomach. They may give your dog activated charcoal which will help absorb the theobromine. IV Fluids may be given as well. Immediate attention can very well save the life of a dog that eats chocolate. Let’s all be attentive over the holidays with precaution and make it a wonderful holiday season!
