Luck Of The Irish... Just Not The Chocolate!

With the day of celebration of fortune and luck around the corner, bear in mind the protection of our beloved pets from chocolate. Our beloved dogs are curious and love to investigate. Candy and Goodies are easy to secure so prevent a travesty of heartache from chocolate poisoning by making sure any chocolate is properly secured.

Exhaust due diligence with visitors (especially small children) who may not be aware of the fatal consequences. Losing your dog to toxic poisoning is bad enough, but the veterinarian costs of treating such an emergency are very costly and will definitely ruin your luck for the day.

An interesting note is that Baking Chocolate has the highest content of theobromine, the culprit in chocolate poisoning. It only takes two ounce squares to poison a twenty-pound dog. The toxin affects the heart and kidneys along with the nervous system. Signs or symptoms of chocolate poisoning are vomiting, diarrhea, hypertension, or even seizures.

Prompt medical attention is highly recommended because there is no antidote. Expect the vet to promote vomiting and to possibly pump their stomach. They may give your dog activated charcoal which will help absorb the theobromine. Fluids may be offered as well. Immediate attention can very well save the life of a large dog that eats a vast amount of chocolate. Please be attentive over St. Patrick’s day with precaution and have the day of luck be one of a memorable, happy celebration!
